Sat 4th May – Mon 6th May, 11am – 4pm.

Salts Mill roof space (4th Floor). Free admission.

509 Arts has been researching stories and memories of Bradford’s textile industry from the 1970s onwards. With Bradford Community Broadcasting, Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions has generated 70 hours of interviews, radio programmes and workshop sessions – a wealth of material that will become a future learning resource. The research and data has been used to create 3 new original artworks that can be seen in Salts Mill throughout the May Bank Holiday weekend.

A Cloth for the Lost Mills by Hannah Lamb and Hannah Robson

features a large-scale unique woven and printed cloth inspired by site visits to lost textile mills. The cloth combines motifs from mill buildings with archive imagery and features photography from Carolyn Mendelsohn of the fabric ‘on tour’ at lost mill sites.

Layering Cultures by Alison Welsh

A textile artwork that brings together sections of garments, text and referenced photographs of millworkers. Hand sewing and machine stitching are used to form a cloth that embodies the personal memories and life experiences of Bradford’s diverse communities and industrial legacy.
