⭐️ ZARA MALLINSON ⭐️

Zara is a learning-disabled artist, performer and facilitator who has been performing professionally for more than 10 years. Zara has toured nationally and internationally with Mind the Gap and her recent work includes:

ZARA (2019) A large outdoor production in collaboration with Walk the Plank and Contained (2015/17), directed by Alan Lyddiard.

Zara has trained at Mind the Gap and has also completed various residences at NCDT Drama Schools.

Zara plays mum in our fabulous stage adaptation of Ivor Cutler's Meal One. Catch Zara and the rest of our amazing Yorkshire cast on any of our Meal One performances over the next few weeks 👇

👋 Welcome to the world of Meal One 👋

On our website you will find lots of activities, videos and pictures, all about Helbert and his world. You will also find a pre-show support pack for those who would like to feel prepared for what will be in the show and what to expect at the theatre.

We believe that continued exploration of the ideas and themes in a performance can deepen our responses and connections. To continue Helbert’s fantastical story we’ve created a few different activity packs for you to look at and try out. After each show we will hand out an activity sheet, but there are also loads of online activities here too. You can look at them online, or print off parts of each activity to try.

We've done our first week of rehearsals and it's all very exciting!!

If you're after a show with magic and fun, projections and music, family orientated and relaxed, Meal One is for you.

You're just going to love this, Meal One is based on the iconic children's book by eccentric Glaswegian musician Ivor Cutler.

It’s a really simple story but one that will immediately appeal to anyone with an inner child, and the augmented reality brings a completely different dynamic to the work and creates a theatre experience that many people may not have had the chance to enjoy before. The fiercely talented cast tell this story beautifully and we're sure that both children and adults will be moved by this unique production.

MEAL ONE is a three-person production starring Mind the Gap artist Zara Mallinson as Mum, Wakefield-born Isaac Sugden in his first professional role as Young Helbert and classically trained tenor, composer, theatre maker and educator Sandeep Gurrapadi as Old Helbert.

Yorkshire talent at it's best!!

As part of the immersive experience, you will be invited to meet the cast on set at the end of the performance.

Meal One is based on a 1970s children’s book, it tells the story of 10-year-old Helbert, his Mum, a dog and a cat. When they plant a plum stone in the bedroom floor, a huge tree quickly fills the room, turning it into the best tree-house-playground ever. But when they go downstairs for Meal One – the first meal of the day – they discover a kitchen full of tree roots busily munching through anything edible they can find.

Meal One will be filled with projections, it’s a family show that uses a multitude of technologies to create a truly immersive theatre experience; from breath-taking projections to music, singing and dance, as well as other unexpected surprises.

Part installation, part live performance, audiences can explore an augmented reality trail in the theatre foyer ahead of the show and explore the set at the end to fully immerse themselves in the digital technologies that make the storytelling so unique.
