Are you a talented textile artist looking for an exciting commission opportunity? 509 Arts and BCB Radio invite you to join us in creating an interpretive artwork for Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions. 🧵

🏭 Dive into the rich tapestry of Bradford, a city with a textile history spanning two centuries. This project reflects the diverse and vibrant communities that call Bradford home and pays homage to its textile legacy.

🏛️ We're teaming up with Saltaire Inspired and Bradford Museums and Galleries to bring this vision to life.

As a recap...Wordsmithery is a new writing competition developed by 509 Arts with Kala Sangam , Bradford Producing Hub and Mind the Gap .The competition was designed for Bradfordians aged 16+ who want to write for live performance.

Here's a little reminder that we will be at Manningham Mills Community Centre Monday 31st July, thats' tomorrow!!

Come along on our heritage journey through the lost mills and ghost mansions of Bradford in the last 50 years.

It's fascinating and truly wonderful, here's a snippet from one of our sessions

"I started work at Priestman’s in 1957 straight from school, as an apprentice in drawing, spinning, twisting and winding. An overlooker died at Christmas 1961 and I was given his job, although I was still an apprentice."

There used to be over 350 working mills in Bradford. In the last 50 years most of them have closed and today there are less than 20. The rest have been demolished or repurposed. Many have tragically burnt down. Bradford’s great textile buildings and the people who worked in them are slowly disappearing.

Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions is rediscovering the stories of Bradford’s recent textile past in words, pictures, audio and video.
